The following are suggestions on changing server rules. I would be delighted to have intelligent debate on the thought behind them. They are borrowed and modified from Redwall MUCK.

Compare the following against http://webbcraft.co.uk/about.php and http://webbcraft.co.uk/rules.html

Suggestion: Regardless of "the rules", I would strongly suggest having them in one place on the web and ONLY one place. "http://webbcraft.co.uk/rules.html" is a great place. I would suggest the rules explicitly be noted as applying to both the server and the forum as appropriate. I would also suggest a violation of the rules at one location, such as on the server, result in a ban at all server locations, such as the web forum. I would suggest ban appeals be made to an email like staff@webbcraft.co.uk which should go to ALL currently serving "staff" and *NOT* provide a public place for rule violators to whine, beg, plead, taunt, or otherwise continue to annoy people. BANNED should mean BANNED.

Now on to some suggested changes in the rules:

Mission Statement
Welcome to Webbcraft SMP! (By the way, is it "Webbcraft" or "Mushroom Co."? Choosing ONE of the two would be a good plan.) Webbcraft SMP is a friendly community that caters to cooperative play styles. (I removed "any", as we do not cater to the griefing play style.) For a list of current server features, check our __plugins__ page. (With a link to what plugins and features.)

The mission of Webbcraft SMP is this:
To support and encourage the enjoyment of the players

First and foremost, this server is for enjoyment, for having fun with, but not at the expense of, other players on Webbcraft SMP. PvP is supported, but griefing (the act of irritating and angering people) is unwelcome. Players that cause intentional grief for other players are subject to immediate suspension and possible termination.

Webbcraft SMP is PG/ PEGI 12 rated (I don't care the actual rating, but pick some external reference. "No excessive foul language" is foolish, for what is "excessive" to one person is "baby's first words" to someone else. Pick an external rating and stick with it). This rating is enforced on the server as well as the forums, everywhere. Minecraft has violence, battle, etc., but it is not explicit or titilating. Assume that your transcripts will be published by accident and shown to parents of 16 year old players. Play accordingly.

Players are welcomed and encourage to expand Webbcraft SMP by building and crafting items. Everyone enjoys more places to go and things to see.

Inspections by management are not required for any builds. A player complaint about anything built will be evaluated by management. The idea is to have fun, so build things that are in the spirit of Minecraft.

Remember that some players are offended by profanity or other innuendos, and be reasonable to our age group. Remember, anything in writing comes out harsh! Some players are offended by everything, though. For them, since nothing works, we're not worried. Be courteous to players and save the cruelty for the mobs.

Any complaints can be directed to any staff at any time. Staff is a part of the management of this system, and will be responsive to your needs.

Staff are also the final say on this system. Staff has the authority to suspend players or terminate them.

Any suspended or terminated player has the right to make a statement via email to (Luigi's email here). All such statements will be read and responded to. The decision of LuigiOfTheBakery is final.

General Rule Guidelines

In general, our rules are very simple, this summarizes them:

Staffers are responsible for obeying as well as enforcing the rules (see 'Staff Policy' for the rules staff must follow in addition to the rules below!)

Griefing is intolerable (I missed this the first pass, thank you Vulturboy!)
Lying is intolerable

When suspended or banned it's forbidden to reconnect using alternate accounts

Religious/ethnic slurs and such are unacceptable

Language and actions must be consistent with PG/ PEGI 12 (Pick a rating, again doesn't matter which as long as players don't get to decide what "excessive" means)

No hacking or use of Minecraft mods. The only permitted Minecraft mod is Optifine. No flying, X-ray or other such mods.

No "scamming", that is, offering to trade and then not fulfilling your end of the trade agreement.

No begging for items, gear or supplies. This is a survival server.

No duping permitted, no giving away creative spawned items.

No spamming.

No advertising other servers.

Replant trees in wilderness areas.

No using banknotes to evade in-game taxes. (Are banknotes gone now?)

(Note, This list needs to be short and sweet. Rules that restate or explain "no griefing" need to be one rule. If this needs to be explained in detail, make a separate page on what is considered "griefing" on the server. Then "Well, I didn't see that was against the rules!" "It's griefing. Go to http://webbcraft.co.uk/griefing, and griefing is against the rules. Another idea... don't make rules you CAN NOT enforce. If "giving away creative mode items" is a problem. DO NOT offer "creative mode". Having a rule on "don't give away creative mode items" resembles using a colander for a bucket. If it is possible to evade taxes by having banknotes stored in chests... don't allow banknotes to exist... problem goes away, rule no longer needed.)

In general: this is a shared playground. Intentionally (as judged by management) causing grief to another player is unacceptable. Some players are easily offended and that's their problem; we're not a nanny system. LuigiOfTheBakery is the final arbiter in the event of such a complaint.

Staff Policy

Guiding rules for Webbcraft SMP staff

Staff are granted authority and responsibility on Webbcraft SMP for carrying out the mission statement. Below are listed the concrete rules that Webbcraft SMP are required to work within.

1) The decisions of LuigiOfTheBakery are final and binding.

2) All punitive actions (suspension or termination) must be reported via email to (insert Luigi's email here) immediately.

3) Players are to be held with high esteem, and treated with respect and courtesy at all times. A player acting without respect or courtesy to a staff is to be temporarily suspended.

4) Staffers are required to act with their best judgement on the spot; if no other staffer is available for consultation, then they must act alone within what they see as the best interest of Webbcraft SMP.

5) Staff-abuse is intolerable. Staff-abuse is defined as using any facility granted by having staff authorization to affect any player or builds not belonging to the staffer without the player's approval for any reason other than to enforce compliance with the mission of Webbcraft SMP.

The penalty for Staff-abuse will be termination of the staffer from this system in any capacity both on the server and in the forums in any capacity, as player or staffer.

In a nutshell, staffers are to act as though they are serving paying customers known as players in a standard business environment. Courtesy is demanded of staffers, and courtesy is expected from players--upset players will be and are expected to be discourteous, placing an even heavier burden upon the staff. In all ways, the staff is expected to utilize their best judgment, and act accordingly.

(EDIT: Added a specific "griefing" rule per Vulturboy. Griefing was mentioned elsewhere, but it should be explicitly in the "rules" section.)

I totally agree.....Im going to say this isn't going to happen due to past actions tho...so don't get your hopes up. btw I think if you break the trust given to you in creative and do what some have done ..you should have zero access to any creative mode or commands.... just my thought.

I would be VERY surprised to see much if any of this given consideration. Things like /tptoggle should be active for all members and set "NO" by default. That is not the case. PVP should be set OFF by default. That is not the case. And so it is abuse is allowed, by default, and to disallow PVP abuse you have to "do something", and to set /tptoggle you have to be granted special permissions, usually by forking over a check to prevent abuse TO you and allow abuse FROM you (not you personally, just 'you' the general player).

But the kind of thinking that attempts to make player vs. player abuse impossible by locks and privileges, and then ruthlessly punishing staff that violates the rules simply isn't there. The kind of thinking that says, "Players outrank staff" isn't there. So no, I'm not expecting much. I'm 47. I've learned to lower my expectations.

That said, WebbCraft SMP is still better than the one realm I was on, where the only rule was "I own the server, so I do what I want, and I let my personal friends do what they want, and if people are abusive to you, sux to be U." MC@NFSN server is whitelist only, so only people who had a subscription to the NFSN server could get on, and to some extent that was great. Griefing was kept to a minimum because nobody wanted to risk their NFSN website being taken off the server, and people paying for a website would likely be more mature (and check-earning) people. The down-side was... people were rarely on, and without Factions you couldn't tell who was doing what, and where it was ok for you to mess with anything.

So I essentially looked for the largest SMP server that didn't look like it was run by a crew of clowns, and this one came up first. I've not been on any other servers. Before I joined WolfWind, the members have been decent towards me, so when we had the server map reboot, I decided to join in with them. To date, I've no reason to look for another server and waste my effort so far.

So the current rules might be somewhere between absurd to counter-productive towards encouraging "good player behavior", in my mind, but so long as I can deflect or ignore the bad behavior, it doesn't matter. And every so often I find it fun to mock people violating the rules with /smite-fapping or spamming "JOIN MY FACTION, I need minions for more power!"

Romaq, this is great. I noticed you forgot the "No griefing" rule, though. If you have a Skype account, I would love to work on a more solid set of updated rules and such for the server, as you seem to have a lot of great ideas that I could build on, and vise versa.

Edited... thank you!

I do have a Skype Account, romaq_of_beaumaris but I don't generally use Skype. If you wish to connect, it matters that I know who you are rather than presume you are more spam. :)

I don't know how productive an "updated set of rules" would be for the server. The rules need to come from Luigi, and he needs to "own" it. That is, the rules need to be one he believes are necessary and appropriate to HIS server. The stuff here is more "ideas to consider".

Redwall MUCK is operated under a Legal Liability Company (LLC) called Limitless Knowledge Association, a non-profit company so even if someone tried to sue the server, they could only sue Limitless Knowledge. As Limitless Knowledge has no assets, they could sue, win the suit, and get NOTHING. That was how Otter protected his personal liability. On top of that, he runs the server as a business with customers: the players. I'm not clear Luigi is thinking on those terms.

Spending time making up suggested rules for a server I don't control seems like a waste of time. I really only posted them here because of the conversation in General Chat, and as much as possible I simply copied the rules from Redwall MUCK rather than any original thinking of what those rules needed to be.

You are welcome to do as you think best, but if you quote these rules even to change them, please credit Brian Jones (Otter) of Redwall MUCK and give a reference link to http://rwmuck.limitless.org/rwmuck/

Beyond that, I should be playing on the server, except I really should be sleeping. I'm trying not to fall out of my chair after a long day at work.

"We should make our own rules."

Already done, Stojan44, and in my opinion the rules suck, and much of the suckage comes from unclear wording (WTF does "excessive" mean?), unequal enforcement and staff that treats their position as a perk of power rather than an opportunity to... you know... support the player base.

Not all staff appear to be children living in Washington DC, but there are enough complaints in the forum to show there is a problem. So I offered suggestions to change it. I'm very glad it isn't my problem. It sucks to be a sysadmin.

Well thought out and reasonable rules. This would be a perfect change to the server in my humble opinion. +1
