Public Ban Log

Regarding ban appeals, I find that implementing a public ban log would better organize the Ban Appeal section of the forums. Recently I have seen ban appeals in which users either did not know why they were banned, or refused to state why they were banned. Unfortunately when this happens, it often can lead to rumors as to why a user was banned, and can even create drama.

I have been on many other Minecraft servers in the past, and I have found that many of them had a public Ban Log, which states the username of a user and why they were banned. Public ban logs are very good for reducing drama, keeping bans and ban appeals organized and more precise, and also help staff keep everything organized when it comes to bans.

While it is possible that staff may currently have a ban log that is not public, but is private, a public ban log would be better in not only helping staff be more transparent with players, but will also help keep staff more accountable regarding their actions on the server.

I would like to ask Luigiofthebakery to please seriously consider implementing a public ban log in which only staff can edit, but everyone can view, where staff state which user they banned, why they banned them, and for how long they are banned. This way the staff can be more organized and players will hopefully feel more comfortable with staff doing their jobs.

Thanks you for reading my suggestion.

This may be one of the best suggestions I have seen. In terms of risk and reward the rewards outweighs greatly. The only hard part would be the process of taking a ban an uploading it to the log.

Thanks! Yeah, there are a lot of upsides to implementing this.

Regarding "uploading" a ban to the log that would be on the forums, I just figured the log itself could be a pinned thread in the Ban Appeals section of the forum where a Mod or Admin would just make a new post whenever they banned someone. I was thinking that the format would be something like the following:

Username of the person banned:

Type of ban:

Breif description of why they were banned:

Listing all of those things should be no problem as long as the Mod/Admin either remembers all of the details or takes a screenshot at the time of the ban. And I don't think it would be necessary to upload older bans, becuase that would take too much time and effort to look through the server data. But they could just start it from this point in time.

There comes a problem with people wanting their tempbans/bans kept to themselves and the staff that banned/pardoned them.

There's already a ban log in skype for the staff if it's still running, creating a public ban log wouldn't benefit the forums much - only pointing shame at players who were banned (and may not want it publicized.)

I do apologize for the double post, but I cannot edit my posts.

A ban appeal section is probably the only thing needed for punished players. If they want to be pardoned, they can make an appeal or wait it out. Many people make mistakes and don't prefer their reputation ruined by painting a picture with a forum post that they griefed.

A ban log would only provide the public with curiosity-fulfilling information about said player who was banned for such reason, it isn't needed, unless, of course - this information is absolutely needed by the public. The amount of bans that are so severe are dismal in the lights of the petty abuses by players that have given them a tempban or ban - and may make a player uncomfortable with the mistake they made if it's on the forums.

You have a good point when it comes to tempbans, and maybe temp bans could be excluded from a public ban log. But there comes a point when allowing the players to the staff accountable becomes more important than the shame one user may feel from having their username publicly shown on said log.

The main purposes for a public ban log are to keep staff accountable of their bans, as well as to inform players at to why they are banned. Public ban logs are in no way meant to intentionally shame players, but to state the fact that a player was banned and why.
The reason why a public ban log on this server is so crucial, is becuase at this time, on this server, the players don't have any proper way of keeping staff accountable. All we can do is just complain in the complaints section, and while we can take screenshots, I find that it would be more effective to keep staff accountable if they reported their own actions(such as a ban).

A few examples(and I won't name names) of Mods and or Admins abusing their power to ban are the following:
-While I haven't seen this myself, I have heard from a few people that there used to be a Mod that once banned most of the players for no reason. Now, I have no way of knowing for sure if this is true or not, but I would certainly want to prevent any such thing from happening again.
-Recently there has been a user that was banned, supposedly for greifing, but was later unbanned becuase they are friends with some of the administrators. Becuase we don't have a public ban log, I don't actually know for sure why this player was banned, so I don't know if I am supposed to trust the players who informed me of this, or trust the staff's decision to unban this player.

The fact that a public ban log would make Mods and Admins more accountable would help players to trust the staff more, and I hate to say it, but ever since even before I joined, the players don't seem to have been happy with things that staff do, since some of them supposedly weren't held accountable.

Thank you for all the feedback so far. I would like to get feedback from more staff about this idea, if possible, as well as users. I still think that this would be a great way to help the staff and the community get along better and have less drama when it comes to the rules.

As former staff, I can say that this would be of no use to the staff team, it would only be a burden which eats time. It only fills the curiosity gap with the public of how someone was banned.

Players should have the right to privacy, and if they want information regarding their offense disclosed should be up to them, not a mandatory measure performed by a staff member.

good idea. on the main server i play on (which i will not get in trouble for advertising, so the name will stay hidden), across all servers, the player, the one who banned/muted/warned the player, and the reason, are all stated. +1

+1 if you guys can't handle a ban log, you need to reconsider a lot of fucking things. It also keeps ALL punishment tracking easier, can halt false accusations - if no staff are corrupt enough to change said evidence, at least; can be remotely modified without having to join the server (said ban log host should allow you to modify bans/mutes/warnings), it keeps a tally for you so you don't have to keep track of that, provides even the date/time, reasons and who did it and can be synced with plugins relevant for such stuff.

Also a very good idea to show which donators might be abusing /kick a lot. :)

With what happened with the server, I hope the staff at least has a private ban log that is separate from the plugins, that way you guys didn't lose all of the data for it. But what happened with the server and losing a months worth of data is just one more reason to have a public ban log on the forums.

A really effective and simple idea that works very well on other servers. If it's not too much of a hazzle, I'd like to see this on The Mushroom Co.
